In 1993 I was an Equity Partner in a large Southampton practice and decided I needed a fresh challenge. I was seeking a dynamic commercial practice where commitment and expertise would be recognised and rewarded.
Any change of firm at my level of experience could be a problem and I had interviews with a number of local firms for senior positions. At those interviews I could see that there was a vast range of different approaches and attitudes towards the provision of legal services and the internal dynamics of those firms were very different.
At interview, the partners of Steele Raymond LLP immediately impressed me with their enthusiastic commercial approach to the law and I intuitively knew I was dealing with people on the same wave length. They struck me as solicitors who recognised and were in tune with their clients’ needs and then committed to provide a service of excellence. Solicitors who were astute businessmen in their own right and who put client care first. I could tell that the meteoric growth of the firm was no accident.
I had no hesitation in joining the firm and found a vibrant positive atmosphere where all staff were encouraged to contribute fully to the firm’s success and maximise their individual potential.
I joined an exceptionally busy litigation department where the quality and challenge of the work matched any City firm. Colleagues were supportive and helped me settle in and a real spirit of common purpose and teamwork was evidenced throughout both offices of the firm.
Everybody works hard and contributes to the firm’s progress and I was encouraged to show initiative and help develop the practice. It was refreshing to find an open door policy where I could discuss and resolve any issues. Evidence of success was rewarded and encouragement given to develop the way forward.
The firm has clearly come a long way in its twenty year history and has remained true to its original principles. I found a happy, positive team of lawyers committed to the provision of the best possible legal services for whom compromising standards was not an option.
My regret is that I did not find them sooner.
