International Women’s Day is a global celebration that takes place on 8th March each year, highlighting the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women around the world. It’s also a day to raise awareness around gender equality and address the ongoing challenges women face in many areas of their lives.
Since 1911, International Women’s Day has been a day that promotes gender parity, celebrates women’s achievements, and raises awareness about discrimination. It is the biggest women-focused fundraising day of the year, and with numerous events held globally each year, it presents a significant opportunity to further accelerate the progress of women’s rights and advancements.
This year’s International Women’s Day theme focuses on #AcceleratingAction for gender equality, highlighting the importance of taking swift and decisive steps towards achieving gender parity. According to data from the World Economic Forum, it could take until 2158 to reach full gender equality – roughly five generations from now. The “#AccelerateAction” theme aims to build momentum and calls for urgency in addressing the systemic barriers and biases that women continue to face, both personally and professionally.
As a firm, we are committed to providing equal opportunities for all staff, partners, and job applicants, as well as treating our clients, business partners and others fairly, without discrimination. With a team of over 110 staff members, around 75% are women, working in a range of roles, including solicitors, paralegals, legal secretaries, partners, and team leaders. Notably, 50% of our partners are women, which highlights our dedication to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment where women can thrive in leadership positions. This commitment reflects our ongoing efforts to promote gender equality across all levels of our organisation.
Trainee Solicitor, and member of our wellbeing committee, Hannah Collins highlighted how our commitment to providing equal opportunities was influential in her decision to train with Steele Raymond. She commented: “One of my non-negotiable factors when finding a firm to begin my training contract with was finding a place that promotes a culture of gender equality.
“This International Women’s Day, I am especially grateful to be celebrating and supporting the cause at Steele Raymond. It makes all the difference working for a firm that sets an example of the importance of gender equality in the professional sphere.”
