Marriage on the rocks?

A recent study reported in The Times has revealed some surprising results - those who live by the coast are more likely to divorce.

Whilst Blackpool has the highest divorce rate in the country, within the top 10, Weymouth and Portland and the Isle of Wight are also singled out as areas where marriages are more likely to fail than not.

Conclusions drawn range from “sheer boredom” during winter months and resorts becoming “dumping grounds” for problem families but the key message is that most marriages in these areas fail not because of infidelity but because of money worries.

Coastal locations are desirable areas to live in because of the pace and quality of life so the promise of permanent relocation to an area loved whilst on holiday is not the tonic that many wish for.”

Coastal living has its own challenges, accessibility, IT infrastructure, isolation and seasonality; the job market is less buoyant and full time employment opportunities can be scarce in some areas.

These factors all put enormous pressure on couples in the happiest of marriages. Any dents in a marriage can quickly become a chasm when faced with money worries. That said will these findings encourage many of those living happily by the coast to relocate? We think that this is highly unlikely.
